Ruhija is one of the four sectors of Bwindi impenetrable forest in the eastern side of the park. The other sectors of the park include Rushaga, Buhoma and Nkuringo.
Ruhija sectorhas three gorilla families which include; Bitukura, Kyaguriro family and Oruzogo gorilla family all habituated and available for trekking. A group of 8 people are allowed to visit a gorilla family each day and for this whole sector, 24 permits are available each day. Visitors have a chance to choose which Gorilla families to visit depending on the availability in the dates booked. The forest is covered by fog in the morning hours and is bright midmorning hours, this explains why the region is cold and almost all the lodges in the park are prompted to provide warm water bottles to the guests in their rooms.
THINGS TO DO IN RUHIJA SECTOR
Ruhija is known for gorilla tracking just like any other sector of Bwindi National park, the sector has three habituated gorilla families that are available for tracking. Permits are acquired from UWA headquarters in Kampala through Shoebill safaris ltd (Tour operator in Uganda) or any trusted company in Uganda of your choice. Gorilla tracking starts from the park headquarters after the short briefing and visitor are allowed to track one of the three Gorilla families. The gorilla families are Kyaguriro, Oruzogo and Bitukura.
The locals have started up tourism projects like making of crafts, baskets weaving, and beekeeping to earn a living for their families. Visitors are allowed to participate in these activities and also participate in entertainment by the community as they dance for them.
The Batwa community experience
The batwa people are the indigenous people who lived in Bwindi forest before it was gazeted as a national park by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). The visit to these people will reward you with the insight about their life style of making local herbs for medicine, collecting food in the forest and performing traditional dances for you.
Nature walks lead you to the amazing water falls in the park as you see several tree species and a variety of forest birds in the area. Enjoy the sweet sounds of the forest birds as you walk through the different trails.
Ruhija is one of the best birding destinations in Bwindi National park with over 25 bird species recorded in this region,. The birds there include hornbills, Dusky Crimson Wing, starred robin and bush shrike among others.
